Information

Hebrew is a Semitic language within the Afro-Asiatic language family. It is related to Phoenician, an extinct language, to the Aramaic languages, spoken by only small communities today, as well as to Arabic.

Modern Hebrew is spoken today by about 9 million people in Israel and the diaspora. It is official language in Israel, together with Arabic, and a recognized minority language in Poland.

Almost extinct as a spoken language by Late Antiquity, Hebrew continued to be used as a literary language and as the liturgical language of Judaism. Modern Hebrew is a successful example of revival and development of a literary and sacred/liturgical language into a mother tongue thanks to the efforts of Eliezer Ben-Jehuda in the late 19th century and later to the active promotion in schools and institutions in Israel. Before its revival as Modern Hebrew, the main phases of the language were Biblical Hebrew (the language of the Hebrew Bible and Dead Sea/Qumran Scrolls), Mishnaic Hebrew (the language of the Talmud) and Medieval Hebrew (developed outside Palestine by the different Jewish communities of the diaspora).

Historically, pronunciation differences have appeared in the use of Hebrew as a language of prayer and study in Judaism: Ashkenazi Hebrew (originating in Central and Eastern Europe), Sephardi Hebrew (originating in Spain and Portugal) and Oriental (Mizrahi) Hebrew (used by Jews in the Arab and Islamic world and considered by some linguists as closest to Biblical Hebrew).

Modern Hebrew is written from right to left and uses the Hebrew Alphabet consisting of 22 consonants. The script was developed from the Aramaic script and has also “square” letter shapes.

The ISO code for Hebrew is he.
