Information

Russian is part of the Slavic languages, also called Slavonic languages, which is a group of Indo-European languages spoken in most of eastern Europe, much of the Balkans, parts of central Europe, and the northern part of Asia. It is the most geographically widespread language of Eurasia and the most widely spoken of the Slavonic languages and it has around 144 million native speakers. Russian is the official language of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and is one of the official languages of the United Nations. Despite the vast territories in which it is the official language, Russian has almost no dialectal divisions, almost all people speak common literary language.

The Easter branch of the Slavs was by approximately 1000 AD the predominant ethnic group over much of modern European Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The political unification of this region into Kievan Rus’ around 880, established Old East Slavic as a literary and commercial language. Following the adoption of Christianity in 988, Old Church Slavonic was adopted as the official language. Russian evolved under the influence of Church Slavonic, which evolved from Old Church Slavonic.

Russian is written using the Cyrillic alphabet, which is based on the Greek alphabet with some Hebrew letters to represent sounds alien to the Greek writing system.

Learning Russian or translating from Russian poses some problems to English speakers as Russian conveys meaning largely through changes in the composition of words (e.g., by inflections or the addition of prefixes and suffixes) and its word order is very fluid, unlike English.
