Information

Dutch is a West Germanic language most closely related to German and English. In terms of grammar and vocabulary, it is said to be between German and English. It has much in common also with West Frisian which is an official language in the Province of Friesland in the Netherlands. A daughter of Dutch is Afrikaans spoken in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Afrikaans derived from the 17th century Dutch vernacular of Dutch settlers in South Africa and developed under the influence of African languages. It has a high degree of mutual intelligibility with Dutch.

It is spoken by about 23 million people as a native language and another 5 million people as a second language. It has official status in the Netherlands (16 million speakers), Belgium (more than 6 million speakers, i.e. 60% of Belgium’s population), Suriname and three island countries in the Caribbean Sea (Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten) which were part of the Netherlands Antilles prior to its dissolution in 2010, but where Dutch is spoken as first language by only a small percentage of the population. The Dutch variety spoken in Belgium is also referred to as Flemish, although the differences to Dutch are minimal and there is no officially recognized language called Flemish.

Dutch has many diverse dialects but their use has been declining. Use of regional languages in the Netherlands (Limburgish, Frisian and Dutch Low Saxon) has been declining as well among the young generations.

A common misconception is related to the use of the word “Dutch” in “Pennsylvania Dutch” (the group of early German-speaking immigrants to Pennsylvania and their descendants),where “Dutch” refers in fact to German (Deutsch).

The ISO language code for Dutch is nl.
