Information

The Turkish language is spoken in Turkey, in Cyprus and by small groups of ethnic Turks in Iraq, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, the Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania and some other regions of Eastern Europe. In Western Europe, there are large Turkish communities in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and France. Turkish is spoken by a population of over 72 million and it is the official language in Turkey and it is one of the official languages in Cyprus.

Despite the influence of the standard language used in mass media, there are still dialectal variations. The Turkish dialects can be divided into two major groups: Western dialects (the only member of this group is Danubian) and Eastern dialects (Eskisehir, Razgrad, Dinler, Rumelian, Karamanli, Edirne, Gaziantep, and Urfa). The modern standard Turkish is based on the Istanbul dialect of Anatolian.

Turkish belongs to the Altay branch of the Ural-Altaic linguistic family, the same family as Finnish and Hungarian. The origin of the Turkish language can be found around 1300 years ago, in Central Asia, when the first written records of Turkish began to emerge, though these were in Ottoman Turkish. Ottoman Turkish was used as the administration and governmental language of the Ottoman Empire, which covered a wide area.

Originally, the Ottoman script was used for the Turkish language, but this was replaced with the Latin alphabet in the early 20th century.
