The origins of Ukrainian are traced back to the Old East Slavic language of the early medieval state of Kievan Rus’. Modern Ukrainian has its beginnings in the 17th century during the Cossack Hetmanate, when spoken Ukrainian started to be written down and used in official documents. In the 19th century, Ukraine had a revival period, when Ukrainian literature classics were written. Despite the fact that there were periods when the Ukrainian language use was limited or forbidden and despite Polonization or Russification policies, Ukraine has maintained a sufficient base which has ensured its survival.
Ukrainian has several dialects which can be grouped into three main groups: Northern group, South-Eastern group and South-Western group.
Ukrainian uses the Cyrillic alphabet.
