Polish is the Slavic language with the second highest number of native speakers worldwide after Russian. It is spoken by approximately 40 million people worldwide. It is the official language of Poland and has minority language status in Lithuania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Romania. There are also important Polish communities in Belarus, the US, Canada, other European countries, etc. With 97-98% of Poles declaring Polish as their native language, Poland is one of the most linguistically homogeneous countries in Europe.
The main dialects of Polish are Greater Polish, Lesser Polish, Masovian, Silesian and Kashubian, the latter being often considered by linguists as a distinct language. Many Silesians advocate for the recognition of Silesian as a distinct language, too.
Polish uses the Latin alphabet to which 9 special characters have been added.
