Hungarian (“magyar” in Hungarian) belongs to the Uralic language family together with Finnish and Estonian and other languages spoken in Russia. It is one of the few European languages that do not belong to the Indo-European language group.
It has approximately 13 million native speakers with over 9.5 million speakers living in Hungary, where it is the official language. It has official status also in Vojvodina (Serbia) and is a recognized minority language in Romania, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine. Romania has the largest ethnic Hungarian minority (more than 1 million).
Hungarian has 9 or 10 dialects, which have a high degree of mutual intelligibility, with the exception of the Csángó dialect in Romania (the Bacău county in Moldova). Due to its isolation, it is closer to an earlier Hungarian dialect.
Hungarian uses the Latin alphabet to which special characters marked by diacritics have been added.
The ISO code for Hungaria is hu.
