Albanian forms a branch by itself within the Indo-European family of languages. The exact origin of the Albanian language is debated. While it is often considered to have derived from Illyrian, there are some linguists who challenge this view and maintain that it derived from Dacian or Thracian.
It is spoken by more than 5 million people as a native language in Albania and Kosovo, where it is the official language, and by Albanian minorities in Macedonia, Greece, Montenegro, Serbia, Italy.
Albanian has two main dialects: Gheg spoken to the north of the Shkumbin river and Tosk to the south of it. Apart from these, there are also dialects spoken by the old Albanian communities in Greece and Italy.
Standard Albanian is based on the Tosk dialect spoken in southern Albania. Unless requested otherwise, our translators will translate into standard Albanian.
The alphabet used by Albanian is the Latin one with some special letters added to it.The ISO language code for Albanian is sq.
